Letterpress
Letterpress printing is the first printing process invented. It is identified by the actual impression the type makes on the surface of the paper.
The plates used at Aldine are photo-polymer, metal or copper. The direct metal impression into the paper will create a slight deboss on the side of your paper. Most printers can print either directly from metal type or from custom plates, but it is wise to consult your printer first to determine their capabilities.
The plate is put in the press. A roller on the press places ink on the type, which is then pressed against the paper. Multiple plates are used to create images with more than one color.
Applications
Letterpress printing has mostly been replaced by other, more modern, forms of printing. However, letterpress is experiencing a comeback as an additional tool in the designer's toolbox for expressing – through tactile as well as visual senses – refinement and authenticity associated with the past.
